The Light

A beam, new comprehension, flashes in your mind. Ah Ha! Your painstaking investigation is bringing the light. Soon you will be able to tell the Story that proves this brand’s ambition is unique.

You fuel your search with more questions to gain more understanding. Finally, you grasp the whole premise for differentiating this offering. The beam stays lit. The engine of this brand train rolls on in. Now you can build one distinct narrative to ensure the value is crystal clear.

Why It Matters

Thorough discovery, Brand Opportunity Analysis, delivers bursts of insight and differentiation that together establish value. This clears the way for brand strategy. The outcomes empower you to state: “What we can deliver” and “Why it matters.” The work provides the foundation for the Core Story for all stakeholders—from execs charged with taking the brand to market, to employees, agencies, clients, the media, and more.

Building a strong argument for singular value early on supports collaboration and speeds adoption. Articulating the brand’s opportunity—its future state—and engaging stakeholders in that Core Story, is the fastest route to buy in, sales and higher multiples. All communications will stem from this nucleus.

The most interesting thing about this bright light is that it comes from diligence and deductive reasoning. Not creative genius or magic, It comes from building an environment rich with insights where the key value propositions of the brand can be revealed and confirmed. Clarity on value, Go-to-Market Positioning Strategy and the Core Story are built during discovery—not brainstorming.

This discovery, these quests, always remind me of detective work. Patient, exhaustive investigation—much like solving a crime. You are searching for insights—clues—like an eccentric but determined detective. When I am up to my knees in research and interview transcripts, images of TV detectives always come to mind. I hear…“Patience.”

It could be Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk, or Emily Deschanel as Temperance Brennan in Bones; Hugh Laurie as “…the brilliant but abrasive Dr. Gregory House.”*, or Cobie Smulders as Dex Parios. Thoughts of Peter Falk as Columbo make me smile every time.

Two things these investigators have in common are doubt and curiosity.

Doubt about what they are seeing and hearing. Doubt that all the impulses of the people around them are correct. Curiosity as to: “What is different?” Doubting what you hear initially plays a big part in holding your course and sticking to strategic branding process. Doubt makes you more patient and diligent. If you run with the first things your clients tell you—you are not doing the work they need.

Good detectives doubt what they hear but constantly listen for clues, “nuggets”, interesting words and phrases, thoughts, contradictions, timing, and logistics. Clues lead to more questions and provide a new picture. This is also the best way to accomplish clear brand differentiation. We need to doubt the first explanations we hear; search and focus with renewed curiosity to see the value differently.

Doubt and curiosity help us stick to method and process designed to bring the light. We look for more and better when we are not sure. We turn each nugget we gather over-and-over to see if it’s valuable. To see if we are holding new ideas or words that will explain, inspire, and convert.

There is the difference. It is not productive to arrive at a creative session with doubt about the Core Story. If the brand strategist builds one clear, foundational narrative—we do not have to. We just get on with great creative.
